The Lucinda River
July 7 - August 12, 2018
Press Release
The title The Lucinda River comes from the short story ‘The Swimmer’ by John
Cheever.
In 1968, Syndey Pollack and Frank Perry directed the screen adaption starring Burt
Lancaster.
During one hot summer day, protagonist Ned Merrill decides to travel home by
swimming through the neighbourhood’s swimming pools. He names this journey after
his wife, Lucinda.
The works presented in The Lucinda River refer to the change in the protagonist’s
mental state through his journey; a beginning and an end, a shift in a mood during a
quick, on a whim decision, and another change, through privacy and social comfort.
Private and public spaces are alternated through the entering of the neighbour’s
backyards - an invasion of privacy within the growth of the community.
